US stand opens at Xpointer to celebrate 200 years of diplomatic relations with Brazil

The American stance opened at the 47th Expocenter, marking 200 years of diplomatic relations between Brazil and the United States (USA). The space was opened on Sunday afternoon in a ceremony held at the International Pavilion of the Assis Brasil Exhibition Park, attended by Nelson Wu, interim Consul General of the Consulate General in Porto Alegre, as well as several officials.

In his speech, the Consul General thanked the state government and made a point of expressing his solidarity with the people of Rio Grande do Sul affected by the floods in May. “My thoughts and heart are with everyone affected by this tragedy. Although the last few months have been a difficult time for the state, it has been a privilege to witness the resilience of the people of Rio Grande do Sul,” Wu said.

In addition to celebrating 200 years of diplomatic relations, US participation at Expointer also aims to highlight the role of agricultural biotechnology in mitigating climate change. “This year, I believe it is fitting that our presence at Expointer focuses on biotechnology in agriculture and its role in building a more resilient and sustainable future,” he explained.

On August 27 and 29, experts from the Consulate’s Economics Section will be present for talks on how agricultural biotechnology can contribute to the recovery and restoration of flood-affected areas in RS, improving soil fertility and agricultural productivity.

Wu highlighted that this approach is due to the fact that the two countries are the first and second largest global producers of biotech crops, in addition to being two of the most powerful agricultural producers. “The United States and Brazil are strong partners in biotechnology and ensuring global food security,” he said.
