United States 3 million passengers

Record number of passengers

Data released by the US agency shows that a total of 3,013,413 million passengers were screened, a number higher than the previous record of 2.99 million recorded in June 2023.

The reason for the large number of travelers is the 4th of July holiday, on which the independence of the United States is celebrated. In addition, the country also has a summer season, when there are school holidays.

TSA Administrator David Pekoske predicted that the holiday would be a very busy date, and warned travelers to be prepared for security to avoid delays. The TSA says everything went well during the holiday and there were no major incidents during the screening. Overall, 35 passengers were screened per second across the country.

What is the Transportation Security Administration?

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) was created in 2001 as a result of the September 11 attacks, and replaced a number of private companies that were hired by airlines to take care of security. Nowadays the agency is responsible for screening and protecting passengers on flights.

In an official note, United States Secretary of State for Security Alejandro Mayorkas celebrated and congratulated the work done by TSA employees. Check out:

“Yesterday, for the first time since its inception in November 2001, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers screened more than three million passengers in a single day at airports across the country. It was an extraordinary accomplishment: TSA thoroughly, error-free and efficiently screened 35 passengers per second, as well as all luggage and carry-on baggage, demonstrating unwavering professionalism and respect for travelers during an extremely busy holiday weekend. Congratulations to the entire TSA team and Administrator David Pekoske.”

Comment

Eight of the 10 busiest days in TSA history have come since the start of 2024, as passenger numbers are even higher than they were before the pandemic. So, the three million people registered this July 4 are worth celebrating, as they represent a surge in airline ticket sales.
