The United Kingdom announced that, starting January 8, 2025, it will require an ETA for visitors from several countries, including Brazil. The purpose of this authority is to enhance border controls and ensure greater security for those entering the territory.

Initially, citizens of all countries except the European Union will have to follow this new rule. For Europeans, the requirement will come into effect in April 2025.

Application Process for brick This will be done entirely online and, according to the British Government, it is recommended that it is requested three working days before travel. The authorization will cost 10 pounds, approximately R$73, and it will be possible to order through the UK official website.

If approved, the ETA will be valid for two years, allowing multiple entries with a stay of up to six months. However, even with authorization, entry into the United Kingdom is not guaranteed, as the traveler is still required to pass through immigration controls upon arrival in the country.

Why is the UK implementing the ETA?

The main reason for introducing ETA is to increase security at the UK borders. Through this system, the British Government will be able to identify potential security risks, such as criminal activity or illegal immigration, before travelers arrive. In addition, the authority facilitates monitoring of tourists and temporary workers.

According to British officials, the ETA will also benefit travelers who qualify as “low risk”, allowing for a more agile immigration process. It is estimated that approximately 267 thousand Brazilians visit the United Kingdom annually for tourism, business or study, and the new electronic authorization promises to facilitate entry for this public.

How can Brazilians request an ETA to the United Kingdom

The eTA application process will be simple and quick, and can be done entirely digitally, without the need to attend consulates or obtain a physical visa. See step by step how to request authorization:

  1. Access the British Government’s official website or download the official app.
  2. Upload or take a photo of your passport, which will be used for travel.
  3. Send a recent photograph meeting the required standards.
  4. Fill in the requested data, including personal and passport information.
  5. Answer questions about travel protection and eligibility.
  6. Pay a fee of 10 pounds (about R$73).

After completing the process, the request analysis time will take three business days. It is worth remembering that the ETA will be sent electronically, and travelers do not need to carry a physical copy of the document.

Even with eTA approval, Brazilians still have to go through immigration control when landing.

UK Border Force, which is the border control service, will check the documents and may require additional information, such as proof of sufficient funds for the stay and return tickets. At some airports, electronic passport gates (eGates) will be available for eTA holders.

If all requirements are met, tourists will be able to travel freely across the four countries that make up the United Kingdom: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. However, it is important to remember that the permit does not allow entry into the Republic of Ireland or other European countries.

ETA validity and renewal

Once approved, the eTA is valid for two years or until the expiry date of the passport used in the application, whichever comes first. During the validity period, the traveler can make multiple visits to the United Kingdom, each lasting up to six months. After this period, you will have to request new authorization to continue travelling.

The new requirements for Brazilians wishing to travel to the United Kingdom aim to strengthen border security and improve the migration control process.

With the implementation of ETA from January 2025, it will be necessary for Brazilian tourists to prepare in advance by placing online orders with the required time before travel.

This new authorization promises greater mobility in entry, but it will also bring more responsibilities for those who wish to travel to the United Kingdom.
