The long-awaited sequel to Avatar, which released in 2009, has finally bagged an official title. The production will be called Avatar: The Way of Water (in free translation, Avatar: The Way of Water).
Disney, which is responsible for the feature, revealed the news during CinemaCon, according to the portal Deadline.
Producer John Landau said that each of the four planned Avatar sequels will have a distinctive storyline with a beginning, middle and end. “However, when you look at them all at the same time, you will see that they are also the same epic saga,” he said.
Avatar: The Way of Water is slated to release on December 16, 2022. If it is successful financially, there are plans to release three more sequels by 2028.
The teaser shown at CinemaCon reveals that Sully (Sam Worthington) and Netiri (Zoe Saldana) are now having kids. The teaser also introduced new creatures, such as a species of flying fish that rides the Na’Vi, and a whale that communicates with them underwater.
At the conference, Disney also announced that the first full trailer for Avatar: The Way of Water will be released in theaters with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness releasing on May 5.
The sequel’s cast will also include actress Kate Winslet, who played Eternal Rose in the James Cameron-directed Titanic (1997), who also signed on to direct two Avatar features.
