The date marks 12 years since the first purchase with cryptocurrency

The date of May 22 marks the first purchase made with bitcoin. On that day in 2010, a programmer named Laszlo Hanyecz paid for two pizzas using cryptocurrency. At that time, he was a resident of Florida, United States of America.

However, the transaction was not that easy. Hanyecz was required to post an ad on a bitcoin forum and asked if anyone was willing to buy him two large pizzas. Payment will be entirely in BTC, or bitcoin.

Four days later, the programmer received a reply from a 19-year-old man who agreed to buy pizza and received 10,000 bitcoins in return.

Following the incident, Hanyecz became known as the “Bitcoin Pizza Man” and revealed that the purchase made the currency more legit for him.

In an interview with US network CBS, the programmer stated that he had made several transactions after buying pizza in bitcoin and estimated that he had spent around $100,000 in the cryptocurrency at the time.

Since then, bitcoin enthusiasts have celebrated May 22 by ordering a pizza. To honor the date, cryptocurrency conference Bitcoin, which took place this weekend in So Paulo, proposed Making a Great Pizza Day and said it would distribute 2,000 pizzas today to the event’s participants.
