Salvador City Hall participates in the conference on the implementation of electric buses in India

The city of Salvador participated in India’s technical mission to learn about the experience of implementing electric buses in the Asian country. The Executive of the Capital of Bahia was represented at the “India Study Tour” by Diogo Pires Ferreira, Director of Transport Planning at the Mobility Secretariat (SEMOB).

The conference provided an in-depth insight into how various departments of the Government of India are collaborating to promote electric mobility and achieve the set climate goals. In addition to the challenges of managing public transportation systems, social issues create a context similar to Latin America.

“Salvador received this opportunity because of the city’s effort and commitment to the fleet electrification process, Salvador is one of the cities in Brazil that stands out, and is visited by people from all over the country and the world. And that was one of the reasons that the TUMI initiative, and our partners, invited us to participate in this mission. Therefore, this was an excellent opportunity to get closer to this international context”, said Mobility Secretary Fabrizio Müller.

In addition to other cities in Latin America, representatives from the Ministry of Cities, the Ministry of Mines and Energy, the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) and a representative of Colombia’s Ministry of Transport were present. The GIZ team, Jens Giersdorf, Carolina Santos del Rio, Natalia Chaves, Juan Manuel Prado Villafraud, were supported by C40 partners such as Mariana Batista and Thomas Maltese, as well as WRI Global Director, Cristina Albuquerque, and many other stakeholders. from WRI India who accompanied the delegation during the technical mission.

“The City of Salvador can look at India’s experience in this fleet electrification process, as well as exchange information and experiences with other cities participating in this mission. The delegation also included people from several cities in Latin America, Mexico, Colombia and the city of Sao Paulo. We can highlight the similar challenges we face and understand how we can overcome them and accelerate this electrification process, each in their own context”, Pires concluded.

The mission was organized by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH within the scope of the Transformative Urban Mobility Initiative, with participation from ICLEI, ITDP – India, World Resources Institute – WRI and C40 Cities and was carried out between . 16 and 24 September in India.
