North Korea has reported what it describes as the country’s initially suspected case of coronavirus.

Condition news company KCNA claimed a man or woman who defected to South Korea a few decades ago previous week returned across the demarcation line had Covid-19 indications.

Chief Kim Jong-un held an unexpected emergency conference with best officials, imposing a lockdown in the border city of Kaesong.

North Korea, a secretive point out, had previously said it experienced no Covid-19 conditions – but analysts say this was not likely.

“An emergency celebration happened in Kaesong city where a runaway who went to the south three yrs back, a individual who is suspected to have been infected with the vicious virus returned on 19 July soon after illegally crossing the demarcation line,” KCNA reported.

At Saturday’s politburo meeting, Mr Kim ordered a “maximum emergency process” to contain the virus.

KCNA added that Mr Kim also launched an investigation into how the individual had managed to cross the closely fortified border, warning those responsible that “a serious punishment” would be administered.

At the identical time, South Korea has not reported of any unlawful crossings of the demilitarized border in new days.

North Korea closed its borders and put hundreds of men and women in isolation six months back, as the virus swept across the world.

Earlier this month, Mr Kim hailed his country’s “shining achievements” in working with Covid-19.
