Japan, Australia and ASEAN countries adopt action plans to decarbonize Asia

The leaders of Japan, Australia and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) adopted a joint declaration on measures to accelerate decarbonization in Asia over the next ten years.

The Asia Zero Emission Community meeting was held on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit on Friday, with Myanmar the only member that did not attend the meeting.

According to last year’s data, Asian countries including China and India were responsible for about 60% of global CO2 emissions. Energy consumption in these countries is increasing with the development of their economies.

The meeting was presided over by Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru. He said that it is necessary to ensure economic growth in Asia as an engine of global growth, but at the same time, measures against climate change are an urgent issue for all humanity.

Participating countries agreed on action plans. One of the projects involves creating a system to visualize greenhouse gas emissions across the entire supply chain for the purpose of evaluating company activities. Another proposal is to promote measures to decarbonize high-emission sectors such as energy production and transportation.
