BRASILIA (Reuters) – In his farewell speech before the Presidency of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), Minister Luis Roberto Barroso on Thursday again criticized the actions taken by President Jair Bolsonaro to discredit the voting system.
Barroso compared Bolsonaro’s performance to the “Mmbembe repeat” that United States President Donald Trump, who was defeated in his re-election bid, did and who said – without offering evidence – that that country’s election There was fraud.
In his speech, Barroso said that there was “re-heated” discussion about the adoption of printed voting in electronic voting machines, which were only intended to disrupt the electoral process.
“Here at the Superior Electoral Court, we try to do our part in resisting attacks on democracy. In fact, one of the strategies of authoritarian businesses in different parts of the world is to discredit the electoral process, to make false allegations. And preaching the discourse that, if I don’t win, there was fraud,” Barroso said.
“What Donald Trump has done in the United States is seeking to invalidate his opponent’s unequal victory and cause the crowd to believe the lies,” he said.
The magistrate leaves the command of the court to Minister Edson Fachin the following week.
