Flight tickets in India issued by hand due to cyber blackout

IndiGo, one of India’s largest airlines, had to resort to hand-filled boarding passes to maintain its operations this Friday (19), as the global airline sector is badly hit by a cyber blackout.

A product update from cybersecurity company CrowdStrike is being cited as the trigger for a global IT failure affecting customers using Microsoft’s Windows operating system, mainly airlines, banks and TV broadcasters.

Microsoft said the problem has now been fixed. Still, IndiGo is using paper to maintain its operations. A photo of passenger Akshay Kothari’s hand-filled boarding pass went viral on social network X. “The Microsoft/CrowdStrike blackout shut down most airports in India. I got my first handwritten boarding pass today,” he said.

“A handwritten boarding pass – talk about an unexpected ‘throwback.’ Thank you for your patience during the outage. We hope Feeling Retro makes your trip a little more memorable. Have a nice trip and enjoy the classic touch,” Indigo replied.
