Los Angeles, May 27, 2021 (AFP) – The Cincinnati tennis tournament, the Masters 1000 for men and the WTA 1000 for women, announced Thursday that it will allow full capacity of spectators in its next edition, to be held from August 14 to 22 . .
The tournament, which takes place before the United States Open, is the first in the country to announce the removal of public restrictions since the onset of the coronovirus epidemic.
Katie Haas, the tournament’s director of operations, said, “As instructed by local officials, we are eager to welcome fans again.”
“Fans bring a lot of energy and enthusiasm to our event and we missed them a lot last year,” he said.
After relocating to New York in 2020 to ease the travel of players participating in the US Open, Grand Slam tournaments, the Cincinnati tournament returns to this city of Ohio State in August.
Since the beginning of the epidemic, tennis competitions held in the United States have been held without spectators or with very few spectators.
This year, the Miami Masters 1000 was played with a limited audience (about 15% of capacity) between late March and early April.
Neither the US Open (September) nor the Indian Wells Masters 1000 (October) announced plans to operate at full capacity.
Cincinnati tournament organizers said they could implement health and safety protocols if necessary.
