The opponents in the Nations League on Thursday morning are not doing well. The Americans are 12th in the standings with only three wins so far. They are not in the classification zone of the final stage of the VNL. The US team was also defeated by Iran, which had not defeated anyone in the tournament until then.

Despite the negative results of the Americans, the direct confrontation between the United States and Brazil in the VNL is quite balanced. In the eight clashes since the creation of the tournament, each side has recorded four wins. In the last duel, Brazil won 3 sets to 1.

After the win against the Netherlands, Bernardinho highlighted Darlan’s excellent play, but stressed that the team needs to put into practice what they do in training. It is essential for the Brazilian coach to have “more continuity”:

– We had a good week of training, but we still couldn’t put all that into the game. The team improved throughout the match. Darlan grew a lot after the second set, his percentage in attack was higher, he served better again and the central players played very well, but we could have worked better on our defensive system. Now we have to grow during the week and have more consistency.

The Nations League has two groups with eight teams each. The 16 teams are ranked first to 16th in the FIVB World Ranking after the end of the last edition of the VNL in July 2023. In the first stage, each team plays 12 times in three different stages against equally strong opponents: three matches against teams ranked 1st to 4th in the ranking, three matches against teams ranked 5th to 8th, three matches against teams ranked 9th to 12th and, finally, three matches against teams ranked 13th to 16th. Each game is worth points for the leaderboard.

At the end of three rounds lasting three weeks between May and June, the seven best teams and the country hosting the finals, which is Poland this year, advance to the final stage. The quarter-finals, semi-finals and final will take place in a knockout format between June 27 and 30.

Germany, Brazil, the United States, Japan, Poland, Canada and France have already secured places in Paris. Seven of the 12 quotas are filled. There are still five remaining, which will be defined by the world ranking on June 24 after the first stage of the 2024 Nations League. No African team is competing in the VNL, but Africa, still without representation, will be a priority in the search for a place at the Olympics.

The teams participating in VNL 2024 are: Germany, Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Cuba, Slovenia, United States, France, Iran, Italy, Japan, Netherlands (Netherlands), Poland, Serbia and Turkey.
