Brazil and the United Kingdom form partnership to tackle environmental crisis

Joint statement reaffirms plan to reduce fossil fuel use and slow global warming

Published in Brazil and United Kingdom Joint notes This Thursday (22.August.2024), committed to confronting the climate crisis. The statement was published following a meeting between interim Chancellor Maria Laura da Rocha, Minister Marina Silva (Environment) and United Kingdom Energy Security Secretary Ed Miliband.

The meeting, held on Tuesday (August 20) and Wednesday (August 21), addressed the leadership of the 2 countries on the international platform to solve the environmental crisis, including the loss of forests and biodiversity. According to the statement, the continuity of the partnership for green and inclusive growth was reaffirmed.

The partnership also aims to develop a bilateral strategic dialogue on climate with the aim of strengthening environmental cooperation ahead of COP30.

,Brazilian Ministers agreed to host a technical dialogue on the work agenda at the previous COP and options for COP30 to advance priorities and actions from the previous COP and Brazil’s G20 Presidency.“, the joint statement said.

An international summit on the future of energy security will be organised by the IEA (International Energy Agency) in London in 2025. One of the major concerns expressed was keeping the increase in global average temperature below 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Countries committed to publish their Nationally Determined Contributions in line with this target before the deadline of February 2025. A call was also made to move away from fossil fuels in a fair and equitable manner, in addition to phasing out their ineffective subsidies.
