Australia defines Olympic team and excludes NBA player

After removing an NBA player, Australia announced the 12 names called up for the Paris 2024 Olympics, a list that includes eight from the North American league but surprises by excluding Matisse Thybulle from the Portland Trail Blazers. Those called up have a mission to defend the great campaign at the Tokyo 2020 Games, when the country won bronze.

Among the NBA names are: Dante Exum (Dallas Mavericks), Dyson Daniels (Atlanta Hawks), Josh Giddey (Chicago Bulls), Joe Ingles (Minnesota Timberwolves), Jock Landale (Houston Rockets), Josh Green (Charlotte Hornets), Patty Mills (Miami Heat) and Djokovic Reith (Portland Trail Blazers). Another highlight is Matthew Dellavedova, league champion with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016 and currently at Melbourne United.

The big surprise in Australia’s call-up for the Olympics is the cut of Blazers player Matisse Thybulle in the NBA. The 27-year-old shooting guard, in fact, was part of the team that won the bronze medal in 2021 and was also at the 2023 World Cup.

Known as a great defender, Thybulle was a two-time All-NBA All-Defensive selection. In addition, he was in the running for NBA Defender of the Year on two occasions. However, coach Sandy Brondello decided to cut the winger this week along with four other players.

Therefore, it is worth remembering that the Australian team is in Group A of the Olympics along with Canada and the winners of the Pre-Olympics in Piraeus and Valencia.

Finally, this will be Australia’s 16th participation in men’s basketball and 14th consecutively. After all, the Oceania country has participated uninterruptedly in the competition since Munich in 1972. In the previous Games, in Tokyo, the team achieved a bronze medal after defeating Luka Doncic’s Slovenia in the third place dispute.
