Australia approves plan to build “world’s largest solar park”

Australian Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek said the massive solar park would produce enough energy to power three million homes and would include panels, batteries and a cable linking Australia to Singapore.

,It will be the world’s largest solar field, making Australia a world leader in green energy“, highlighted Plibersek.

Known as SunCable, the 12,000-hectare project in the sun-drenched Northern Territory is backed by tech billionaire and environmental activist Mike Cannon-Brookes.

Estimates suggest the solar park will provide four gigawatts of energy per hour for domestic use. The other two gigawatts will be sent to Singapore.

Australia is currently one of the world’s leading exporters of coal and gas, but is being severely affected by the impacts of climate change (extreme heat, floods and wildfires).

According to the latest government data, by 2022, renewable energy will represent 32% of total electricity generation in Australia, compared with 47% for coal.
