Matt Dawson competed at the Tokyo Olympics
field hockey player, Matt Dawson,
who made headlines when he cut off part of his finger so he could compete paris olympics,
He started with a win in the games with the Australian team.
This Saturday morning (27), in a match valid for the first round of Group B, Australia defeated Argentina 1-0 in field hockey.
Before the Olympics, Dawson said doctors advised him to put a cast on his finger and let it heal slowly, which could ruin his division at the Olympics, or have the upper part amputated. He chose the second option and underwent surgery.
In an interview with Australian channel ‘Channel Seven’ Matt said, “I made this decision with the consent of the surgeon, not only for the chance to play in Paris, but also for my future life.” He further said, “The best option was to remove the upper part of the finger. It is a small change and an exciting challenge.”
Matt’s coach, Australian Colin Batch, highlighted the player’s commitment and ability to make decisions.
“It’s not something a coach can decide for a player. All credit to Matt. It’s obvious he got involved in playing in Paris in such a way … I’m not sure I would have done the same,” Batch said.
The Australian hockey team are the current silver medalists at the Olympic Games, losing to Belgium on penalties in the Tokyo final.
