James Anderson finished with 5/56, helping England acquire a 310-run lead. He is two strikes away from his 600th Test wicket. Azhar Ali remained unbeaten on 141. However, with 10 overs to go, the umpires decided that the light wasn’t good enough for any further play to take place and hence resulting in stumps.

Pakistan to bat again
England enforce the follow-on on Pakistan after they are all out for 273. James Anderson finishes with 5/56 as England acquire a 310-run lead. Azhar Ali unbeaten on 141. The second innings was about to get underway but bad light forced the umpires to call stumps with half an hour to go.
Another catch dropped off Anderson
RUN OUT! Mohammad Abbas heads back as Stuart Broad, after dropping a catch at mid-on (the third drop off Anderson in two overs), recovers to strike with a direct hit. Pakistan 261/9 as the last man, Naseem Shah, walks out.
England drops two catches in three balls
Can you believe this? England’s catching, especially in the slips in this Test has been so clean that it’s impossible to believe what just happened out there. Anderson could have had his fifth wicket, but Burns and Crawley failed to hang on to their respective chances. Off the third ball, Burns dropped Azhar Ali at second slip and two balls later, it was Crawley who grassed Mohammad Abbas at fourth slip. Anderson is on the ground with hands on his head.
OUT! Buttler does it again
OUT! Buttler does it again. This time he dives to his right to take the stunning catch that dismisses Shaheen Afridi. Pakistan 8 down for 247. Broad banged the ball in and Afridi, trying to flick it, manages to get a touch of glove on to it. Second wicket for Broad, which means that Anderson will not be getting his 600th Test wicket in this innings.

OUT! England strike with the second new ball. Broad gets Yasir Shah caught at slips for 20. Pakistan 241/7.

And no surprises there, it’s James Anderson, who’ll be bowling the first over with it. Will he, won’t he is the question. He is on 597 Test wickets. With rain expected on the remaining two days, will he get the prized 600th wicket? Let’s find out.
Woakes gets Rizwan
OUT! Jos Buttler takes a smart catch down leg as Mohammad Rizwan falls to Chris Woakes for 53. Pakistan lose their sixth wicket for 213. Just a tickle down leg and Jos Buttler takes a brilliant, smart catch diving to his left. Just when Pakistan looked like getting back into the match, a wicket falls. None the less, it’s been a lovely knock from the keeper batsman.
17th Test ton for Azhar Ali
Drives through covers and it’s a boundary. With that, it’s a hundred for Azhar Ali, his 17th in Tests. The Pakistan captain has been superb in this inning so far. What a knock. He came when Anderson was looking like getting a wicket every second ball and how he’s led the innings. Simply superb. Everyone applauds from the balcony of the Pakistan dressing room. Pakistan are 209/5 after 73 overs.
Fifty for Rizwan, 200 up for Pakistan
A six from Mohammad Rizwan and that brings up his half-century. It’s taken him 196 balls but he’s played a wonderful hand in brining Pakistan back from the abyss. He came in when they had lost a fifth wicket with just 75 on the board. At a time a total of 120 looked tough, Rizwan gave Azhar the support he needed at the other end. They’ve added 125 runs off 211 so far to take Pakistan to over 200. Played!
Pakistan reduce deficit to under 400
Well, it’s taken time and some terrific repair work but Pakistan now trail England by less than 400 runs.
Ali, Rizwan bring up their century partnership
It’s been an incredible effort from Azhar Ali and Mohammad Rizwan to bring up their 100-run partnership. Who would have though if it at 30/4, or even at 75/5. Under pressure coming into the Test, the Pakistan skipper has stood up and led the way. Pakistan have a long way to go but this must bode as a strong positive. The total – 183/5 in 66 overs.
The final session is underway
And just like that, we enter the final session of Day 3, which promises to be long with 42 overs to be bowled. Azhar and Rizwan are the key for Pakistan with their partnership reaching 86 runs. The new ball is due in another 19 overs and Pakistan would want to make the most of this old ball till the new ball is due.

Azhar Ali has become the fifth Pakistan batsman to score 6000 Test runs. He joins an elite list comprising Younis Khan (10099), Javed Miandad (8832), Inzamam-Ul-Haq (8829) and Mohammad Yousuf (7530).

FIFTY for Azhar Ali off 137 balls. Applauded by his teammates from the balcony of the dressing room. He continues to fight as Pakistan reach 117/5. This is the 32nd Test half-century for the Pakistan captain.
Rizwan cuts Anderson
Rizwan plays a beautiful cut shot off James Anderson and it goes to the boundary. Rizwan looks comfortable on the crease.

Pakistan have reached the score of 100 runs. They have lost 5 wickets along the way. Azhar Ali and Rizwan are at the crease.
Big appeal by Broad
The ball nipped back after pitching and struck Rizwan’s pads. Broad and England players made a strong appeal and even thought of taking the DRS. But eventually went against it. Replays showed the impact was outside off-stump.
Can Rizwan support Azhar?
Mohammad Rizwan impressed everyone with his performance in the second Test. But with Pakistan in a spot of bother, they need Rizwan to stay at the crease and support captain Azhar Ali. He has started well with a some runs against Bess.

Pakistan fighting
The partnership between Azhar Ali and Fawad Alam is beginning to show confidence. Both batsmen have helped themselves to a boundary each against the pace of Archer. Despite being peppered with bouncers, Azhar and Alam have looked determined. Meanwhile, England have given the ball to Dom Bess at the other end. Pakistan 70/4 after 31 overs.
Can Azhar, Alam offer resistance?
Well, the partnership so far has produced 26 runs – the highest of this innings – and with Archer and Woakes operating, Azhar Ali and Fawad Ali are looking a little more assured than they did against Broad and Anderson. The fifty has come up for Pakistan but they’re far from safety. This pair is crucial for them.
Play resumes, second session underway
So the rain has cleared and we’re all set for play. That said, we may not have seen the last rain interval of the day. It’s still pretty overcast out there. Pakistan resume on 41/1 as Chris Woakes runs in to bowl his first of this Test match.
Lunch on Day 3
Early lunch taken on Day 3 due to rain with Pakistan on 41/4, trailing England (583/8 decl) by 542 runs. The weather update from the Ageas Bowl is that the rain has gotten heavy which led to the lunch interval 20 minutes before scheduled time. Once again, it’s been England’s session, picking up an early wicket and not allowing Pakistan to settle down. It looks like a long road ahead for the visitors.

A second rain break
On no! It’s raining again, more of a frizzle but enough to get the players off the field and bring the covers on. Pakistan 41/4. Just like yesterday. two rain intervals already inside the first session. Frustrating for the English fast bowlers who’ve been all over the Pakistan batsmen. Hopefully it’s just a passing shower and play resumes shortly. We’ll keep you posted.

Thankfully, the delay wasn’t a long one and we’re set to resume play. How will Pakistan’s batsmen reach? Fawad Alam is the new man in and he’d want to get a decent score under his belt following his duck in the previous Test. Right then, Anderson completes his over.

GONE! Anderson gets his fourth wicket as Asad Shafiq departs. Pakistan in all sorts of trouble at 30/4. Slightly outside off and Shafiq nicks it to slips. With that, rain has started to come down forcing the players off the field and covers to come on. Pakistan trail by 553 at the break.
Pakistan have a mountain to climb
With plenty of rain predicted on Tuesday, it seems as if England did the right thing putting 583 runs on board. With Pakistan already three wickets down, a follow-on looms large. England would want to get the remaining seven wickets as quickly as possible and put Pakistan in again. Promises to be an intriguing day ahead. That said, the players make their way out to the field. Hello and welcome to our live blog on Day 3 of the 3rd Test between England and Pakistan in Southampton. At this moment, it seems Pakistan have dug themselves a hole that is really hard to get out of. On the back of a sensational innings from Zak Crawley and Jos Buttler, the hosts posted a mammoth total of 583 in the first innings. James Anderson then rattled Pakistan’s top order and on 2nd day, Pakistan enter at 24/3, trailing by 559 runs. Talk about pressure. England can well and truly finish the game today itself.
